For many professional athletes, it’s not just their performance in games that matters. Reporters and analysts are also watching their character outside the game, to determine what kind of person he or she is.
One rugby player spends a good portion of his free time doing charity work. The Newcastle Knights rugby club is lucky to have Trent Hodkinson on their roster.
Hodkinson is a very generous man who devotes a lot of time to hanging out with kids. He first met a 15-year-old teen named Hannah Rye last year, when she was in the hospital fighting Ewing’s sarcoma cancer.
Hannah is a huge fan of the Newcastle Knights rugby team, so it was a dream come true for her to meet a player. She was in remission until just a few months ago, when everything changed.
Doctors told Hannah that her cancer was terminal. There was nothing they could do except make sure that the rest of Hannah’s life was as memorable as possible.
Her high school was willing to move up a formal so that Hannah would be able to attend. She was so excited for the event and to spend it with her classmates.
There was another surprise in store for Hannah, though. Hodkinson was going to attend the formal with her.
He arrived at Hannah’s house, and the pair rode to the dance together. There was even a cake that they cut in front of Hannah’s classmates.
The whole evening turned out to be better than the teen could have ever imagined. Hodkinson was a perfect gentleman and date.
“It was absolutely a magical moment when Trent turned up with a big bunch of flowers at our house,” said Racheal Rye, Hannah’s mom. “A perfect night.”
Though things will never be the same for Hannah or her family, they are making the best of what they’ve been given. With the help of Hodkinson, they are off to a great start.
